GIF Nexus
The new flagship grants program of the German-Israeli Foundation replaces GIF’s two previous grant programs, the GIF Regular Program and the GIF Young Scientists’ Program, offering a single unified program to fund early career scientists and established researchers in parallel tracks.
Focal topics replace the recurring cycles by research area.
The collaborative track for joint proposals by German and Israeli researchers funds projects of up to 4 years, with an annual budget of maximum EUR 200,000 total for all PIs (i.e the maximum project budget is EUR 800,000 for 4 years).
The solo track for early career scientists up to 6 years after their doctoral degree funds one-year projects without research partner in the other country with a maximum budget of EUR 25,000.
The goal of Nexus is to promote scientific excellence through collaboration between German and Israeli teams of scientists.
The application procedure includes a pre-proposal stage, based on which only submissions of the highest scientific excellence are invited to submit a full proposal. Mutual visits in the collaborative track respectively a visit to the partner country in the solo track for early career scientists are a mandatory part of the project.
SIP - Sustainable Impact Program
The new SIP (Sustainable Impact Program) program replaces the GSCP (GIF Sustainability Cooperation Program) program in awarding top-up funding for former GIF grantees to strengthen potential project impact.
SIP grants offer one-time funding of up to EUR 5,000 for former GIF grantees, awarded through an application and review process.
GIF grantees are eligible to apply up to 4 years after conclusion of a grant. The scope of collaborative activities supported by the new program includes publishing articles in (open-access) publications, producing educational and promotional videos, developing academic courses, and travel to meetings (to Europe and to Israel) to exchange ideas for future scientific cooperation.
GYSM - GIF Young Scientists’ Meetings
GIF organizes up to 4 scientific workshops per year on varying topics from all areas of research, offering early career scientists a platform to meet, become acquainted with each other’s work, learn about funding opportunities, and discuss their ideas with established scientists in their field of research.
The GYSM are open to doctoral students in the last stages of obtaining their degree, and researchers up to 5 years after receiving their doctoral degree.
GIF Regular Program (expiring)
Established as the original funding program of the German-Israeli Foundation in 1986, the Regular Program supports cooperative research projects conducted jointly by German and Israeli scientists.
Starting with the call for proposals 2021, the program is replaced by the collaborative track in the new GIF Nexus program.
GIF Young Scientists' Program (expiring)
Established in the year 2000, the GIF Young Scientists’ Program supports researchers within the first years after completing their doctoral degree in establishing contacts with potential collaboration partners in Israel or Germany.
Starting with the call for proposals 2021, the program is replaced by the solo track for early career scientists in the new GIF Nexus program.
